Andreas Artturi Alariesto (1900–1989) was a self-taught Finnish naïve artist from Sompio, Finnish Lapland. The landscapes, stories and traditions of Lapland are central to his paintings. His artistic work also included small-scale models, related sculptures and photography.
Alariesto worked during his life as a lumberjack, fisherman and caretaker and received no formal art education. Although he had been inspired to create art since his youth, his distinctive naïve style began to develop more strongly from the 1950s onwards. His motivation for painting was particularly connected with preserving and recording the traditions and way of life of his native region.
Alariesto's first official exhibitions were held in Helsinki and Rovaniemi in 1976, when he was already 75 years old. He subsequently became widely known as an artist during a period when naïve art was also receiving greater public attention.
A permanent exhibition dedicated to Alariesto's work was established in Sodankylä, where the Museo-galleria Alariesto preserves and presents his art and the cultural heritage of Lapland and old Sompio.
This Arabia wall plate is a charming example of Alariesto's Lapland imagery and makes a wonderful addition to a Finnish art, Lapland, naïve art, Scandinavian, or vintage Arabia collection.
