A striking vintage Finnish Karjalan raanu (Karelian raanu) featuring a bold geometric pattern in deep red, black, green and cream.
The textile is decorated with repeating traditional-style geometric motifs, including diamonds, crosses and stylised symmetrical forms, separated by intricate horizontal woven bands. The strong colour combination of red, black and muted green gives this piece a particularly distinctive Finnish and Karelian folk-art character.
Karjalan raanu is a traditional Finnish wall textile associated with Karelian textile heritage. The technique is closely associated with the vippelä / three-shaft ruusukas structure, and museum sources describe Karjalan raanu as a woven textile using colourful wool yarns.
Raanut became especially popular as decorative wall textiles in Finnish homes during the 20th century, with the 1960s and 1970s being an important period for their popularity.
This piece has a beautiful substantial woven texture and would work especially well as a statement textile in a Scandinavian, Nordic, rustic, cabin, mid-century or eclectic interior.
