A beautiful and highly distinctive vintage Finnish Fauna Fennica Karhu (Bear) wall plate by Oiva Toikka, designed for Nuutajärvi in 1983.
The plate features Toikka's characteristic expressive depiction of a Finnish bear, created with thousands of fine, graphic strokes across an opal-white glass centre. The earthy brown glass border gives the piece a wonderfully organic Nordic character, while subtle variations in colour and surface add to its vintage appeal.
Fauna Fennica is one of Oiva Toikka's notable Nuutajärvi glass designs. The series celebrates Finnish wildlife through highly stylised, almost hand-drawn animal imagery. The Karhu is particularly striking as a piece of Scandinavian wall art, combining Finnish nature, 1980s glass design and Toikka's unmistakable artistic language.
The plate is approximately 30 cm in diameter and is designed to be displayed on the wall. The reverse has a metal hanging mechanism.
A signature/marking is visible along the edge, consistent with the Oiva Toikka/Nuutajärvi Fauna Fennica examples.
