A striking Kalevala Koru “Hannunvaakuna” (Saint John’s Arms) bronze pendant, designed by Germund Paaer. Measuring 52 mm and suspended from an 80 cm chain, the pendant features an ancient Nordic protective symbol traditionally believed to ward off evil and protect its wearer. This large vintage model was produced by Kalevala Koru until the early 2000s.

The Hannunvaakuna is an ancient protective symbol associated with warding off evil. The continuous, single-band form of the symbol was traditionally believed to create a protective force, a belief that was widespread across northern Europe.
The symbol has also been interpreted as representing the four protective spirits of the earth, each positioned at one corner and supporting the sky above the earth. These four directions were associated with West, East, North and South.
Hannunvaakuna jewellery has been part of Kalevala Koru's collection since the company introduced its first collection in 1937. This large Hannunvaakuna pendant, designed by Germund Paaer, was discontinued in the early 2000s.
With its substantial 52 mm pendant and long 80 cm chain, this is a distinctive example of traditional Finnish symbolic jewelry and vintage Kalevala Koru design.
